I just gotta be me

one morning i woke up and all the penguins were walking in sync again.

perfect posture, perfect rhythm, the usual. i tried to join them, but every time i took a step, my heartbeat lagged a frame behind. one of them turned around, he looked just like me... but more well put together; he said, “you’re doing it wrong.” i nodded and kept walking anyway. halfway through the march, i slipped, fell, and somehow started laughing. that’s when i realized i didn’t want to fit in. i wanted to be. i found this shirt on the ice beside me, i put it on, kept walking the wrong way, and never felt warmer.
